What is the ‘visit before returning to work’?

The visit prior to returning to work is not new, yet many employees and employers are not knowledgeable about it. In many cases, it may be the fastest and least administrative way to help an employee return to work after a long-term absence.

What?

  • Informal consultation between employee and occupational physician during period of sickness
  • At the employee’s initiative
  • Employee decides whether to notify employer
  • Invitation is sent within ten days of request

In which cases?

Useful for feasible, sustainable reintegration and where there is good rapport between employer and employee.

Result

  • During the period of sickness, any adjustments to the workplace are discussed and implemented where possible
  • Findings are not enforceable
  • Administrative process is less demanding than the reintegration process

Tips for employers

- Inform employees who have or will be absent for a longer period of time about this formula for discussing and facilitating a return to work (such as by sending them a link to this website).

Tips for employees

- Schedule a voluntary meeting with your occupational physician before a definitive decision needs to be made. You can speak freely and in confidence, as well as get all the information you need.

- Don’t know who your occupational physician is? You can easily find this information via SEED-Connect or by calling 02/549 71 00.

- Bring your medical file with you to the occupational physician. You can download your file via mijngezondheid.be or ask your treating physician for a copy.
