Stop, think, do: start working safely using the last-minute risk analysis

When carrying out high-risk work, you’d better know what you’re getting yourself into. Therefore, safety procedures are in place so that hazards can be identified and eliminated in a timely manner. But a double-check is always necessary. Just before employees start working, a quick extra safety check – also known as a last-minute risk analysis (LMRA) – is necessary. With three simple actions, you can guarantee the safety of the workplace and the surrounding area. How does that work?

Why is LMRA important?

The working situations and conditions at the time the work is being done may be different from those at the time of the general risk inventory. Or the assignment may be more complex than initially thought. By allowing workers to go over the present risks and possible dangers again at the start, they can detect and avoid new – not previously identified – risks, or at least minimise them. If that does not work, a solution can be found together.

What’s so specific about this procedure?

The aim is for employees to briefly evaluate the work just before use or last-minute. Such a check is also necessary after a work stoppage or after changed circumstances at the workplace.

STOP, THINK, DO (we only provide it once, although it is important that this becomes a habit)

The procedure is effective due to its simplicity. An employee goes through the following three steps, just before the start of the (maintenance) work:

  1. Stop: Assess the hazards and risks present.
  2. Think: Evaluate the appropriate measures to eliminate or reduce the risks.
  3. Do: Carry out the measures
