Benefit from using recyclate: Valipac offers double bonus

Good news for Valipac’s customers: from 2025, Valipac will double the bonus to 100 euros per tonne of recycled packaging material. The Belgian knowledge centre around commercial waste helps its customers with the mandatory declaration and recycling of commercial packaging. So from this year, customers will get an extra bonus for that.

What is Valipac?

Valipac is a Belgian organisation that handles the declaration of commercial packaging waste. All companies that put packaging on the Belgian market are obliged to declare it annually. Many companies have that complicated declaration completed by a recognised organisation such as Valipac.

4 types of packaging managers

Type A: You pack goods, or have them packed, with the aim of bringing them to the Belgian market.

Type B: You import packaged goods, or have packaged goods imported, to bring them to the Belgian market.

Type C: You enter packaged goods that you unpack and/or consume within the company.

Type D: You produce or enter service packaging. Service packaging is packaging you use to make goods or services available to consumers (e.g. pizza boxes, chip bags, bread bags, etc.). You declare these so-called household packaging items to Fost Plus.

To which packaging does the bonus apply?

The doubled bonus applies to commercial plastic packaging that:

  • is made with at least 30% post-consumer recyclate (see below)
  • is used for the sale of goods on the Belgian market
  • has been purchased from a supplier registered on myrecycledcontent.be

What is post-consumer recyclate?

Post-consumer recyclate (PCR) is material from selective collection from consumers or from sorting centres. It is contrasted with post-industrial recyclate, which comes from production waste within companies.

As a packaging supplier, you can prove that the packaging consists of post-consumer recyclate by:

  1. Purchasing the raw material from a recycler certified by EuCertPlast (or equivalent).
  2. Having your product certified by an accredited certification body according to an audit protocol approved by Polycert or according to the Recyclass audit protocol for recycled material.

As a user of packaging with recycled material, you will keep the purchase invoices of the packaging material and make them available to Valipac upon request.

How is the bonus calculated?

  • Does the packaging consist of 30% recycled material + do you use less than 200 kg of PCR per year? Then you will receive a flat-rate bonus of 10 euros.
  • Do you use more than 201 kg annually, or does the pack contain more PCR? Then the bonus is calculated according to the calculation example below:

Example: You bought shrink sleeves made of 50% recycled material. The total weight of these sleeves is 20 tonnes. 60% of this weight is destined for the Belgian market (40% for export).

Your bonus is then calculated as follows:
20 tonnes * 60% = 12 tonnes
12 tonnes * 50% recycled material = 6 tonnes
6 tonnes * €100 = €600

How can I receive the bonus?

  • Did you buy corporate plastic packaging with at least 30% PCR?
  • From a supplier registered on myrecycledcontent.be?
  • Are you a Valipac customer?

If you meet these conditions, simply declare the tonnage in your annual declaration to Valipac. Your bonus is then paid out as a discount on your Valipac invoice.

You can read all the details on this page.

The annual return is due by 28 February.
