What major changes are being made to the GREI from 1 March 2025?
Important changes to the General Regulation on Electrical Installations (GREI) will come into force from 1 March 2025. These changes aim to further modernise and increase the safety of electrical installations, both in homes and other buildings.
What will change in the GREI from 1 March 2025?
- New rules for bathing and shower areas
The regulations for electrical installations in damp rooms will become stricter. This is essential to minimise the risk of electric shock, taking into account the latest technological developments.
- Adapted regulations for sockets
There are stricter requirements for low-voltage sockets in domestic and non-domestic installations. IP-rated sockets are mandatory to ensure better protection against dust and moisture. Deviations for the use of other sockets are allowed for specific applications.
- Clearer definition of publicly accessible spaces
A space is considered ‘publicly accessible’ if anyone can enter it without prior permission. The owner, manager, or operator must explicitly state these spaces in the external influences document. Doors and shutters of electrical enclosures or service rooms in publicly accessible spaces must be fitted with a safety lock or, in the case of low-voltage cabinets, be internally shielded. There is a two-year transition period to meet this obligation.
For whom is this important?
These changes are important for electricians when installing, authorised inspection bodies when carrying out inspections, and prevention advisers when carrying out risk analyses of electrical installations.
