Dangerous goods transport update (ADR-2025)

07-02-25

From 1 January 2025, some changes came into force around the international transport of dangerous goods. Those adjustments are set out in ADR-2025, the official version of the 'European Convention on the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road'. The transition period runs until 30 June 2025.

What is ADR?

The Agreement on the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road (ADR) is a European agreement around the safe (international) carriage of dangerous goods by road. The ADR is updated every two years and published by the Flemish Government in the Belgian Official Gazette.

What's new?

There are some changes in ADR-2025:

  • New UN numbers and adjusted definitions (such as for recycled plastic).
  • Additional requirements for packaging and tanks, including rules for jointly packaged waste.
  • New paragraphs on sodium-ion batteries (Class 9).

Transition period

The new rules take effect from 1 January 2025, but companies have time to adapt until 30 June 2025. Until then, the rules of ADR-2023 may be applied; from 1 July 2025, the rules of ADR-2025 are mandatory.
