The autumn jab: how can employees guard against Covid-19 or the flu?

12-10-23

Covid-19 infections are re-emerging more frequently and we can also expect a flu surge this winter. What are the scientific recommendations around vaccinations this autumn?

Is it still important to get a Covid-19 vaccination?

Only a few Covid patients are still winding up in the hospital these days.
But a possible autumn wave could still put considerable pressure on the healthcare system. So a new booster makes sense for vulnerable target groups (the elderly, those with high BMI or chronic conditions, etc.).

Healthcare professionals and people living with people at a high risk are also well advised to get vaccinated. After all, a vaccine does a good job protecting you from getting seriously ill. But that protection does drop over time.

Vaccination is not legally required but highly recommended for one's own protection against the risk of severe disease and for the protection of other vulnerable people.

Where can you get vaccinated?

Vaccinations will primarily be administered by GPs and pharmacists. Many practices advertise their vaccination periods on their website or in the waiting room. The timing can be different. The website apotheek.be lists the pharmacies you can go to for a vaccine.

In Flanders, external prevention services can support the vaccination of healthcare professionals.

Who qualifies?

The vaccines are highly recommended for people with vulnerable health situations. Specifically, the autumn jab is recommended for those over the age of 65, pregnant women, people with underlying conditions, and healthcare personnel.

The jab is also recommended for people who are obese or have a weakened immune system. Other adults also have the choice to get vaccinated for free.

Is it possible to get the Covid-19 vaccination and the flu shot simultaneously?

It is possible. Then you get two jabs, one in each arm. However, Covid-19 infections are likely to go around earlier than the flu. Ideally, you get your Covid-19 shot before the end of October. For optimal timing, it is best to wait until mid-October to get your flu shot.
